“That’s the Markov blanket you’ve read about. This is it. You can touch it,” Friston said dryly when I first saw the throw in his office. I couldn’t help myself; I did briefly reach out to feel it under my fingers. Ever since I first read about Markov blankets, I’d seen them everywhere. Markov blankets around a leaf and a tree and a mosquito. In London, I saw them around the postdocs at the FIL, around the black-clad protesters at an antifascist rally, and around the people living in boats in the canals. Invisible cloaks around everyone, and underneath each one a different living system that minimizes its own free energy.

Cell fractionations.Cells were separated into nuclear and cytosolic fractions as described previously but with minor modifications (71). Uninfected HEK293T cells, PBLs, or MDMs were collected and washed twice in PBS. The cells were incubated in 1 ml buffer B (10 mM HEPES [pH 7.9], 1.5 mM MgCl2, 10 mM KCl, and protease inhibitor cocktail [catalog no. 11 836 153 001; Roche]) on ice for 10 min. Thirty microliters of 1% NP-40 was added as the samples were agitated. NP-40-treated samples were overlaid onto 1 ml of 1 M sucrose dissolved in buffer B. After centrifugation at 3,000 × g at 4°C for 10 min, 200 μl of supernatant was collected as the cytosolic fraction. The remaining supernatant was removed, and the pellet of nuclei was washed with, and then resuspended in, 1 ml of buffer B. Two-hundred microliters of nuclei in buffer B were collected as the nuclear fraction. An equal volume of 2× Laemmli buffer was added to the cytosolic and nuclear fractions. The cytoplasmic and nuclear lysates were heated to 94°C for 10 min before Western blot analysis. Samples were probed for histone H3 (anti-histone H3, catalog no. 9715; Cell Signaling Technology) and tubulin (antitubulin, catalog no. 3873S; Cell Signaling Technology) to confirm the purity of nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions, respectively. Tubulin or histone signals from fractionated samples were normalized to those of the whole-cell lysates to ensure an equal representation of the cytoplasm and nucleus.

I would love to see Catalyst do a program on the low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diet.Last year I tried a ‘healthy’ high-carb low-fat diet, while also running and swimming 4 times a week. I lost 2 kg but it was difficult. I always felt like binge eating and it was tough mentally and I often lapsed. When I stopped running due to an injury I ended up putting on all the weight I lost and then some.This year I’ve been following the low-carb high-fat diet since April and have lost 8kg. The brilliant thing is that I don’t have to fight my body. The diet is not hard, there is no hunger for food, there is no battle with the brain. I eat eggs for breaky, steak and cream for lunch, etc., plus a heap of veges. My energy levels feel more constant and I’m not always thinking about food.There is a bit of controversy around the diet as the old stalwarts resist and suggestion that fat can be part of healthy eating. They say people have to control themselves more and control their hunger. But really, does it sound right that the natural state of being is to be constantly fighting hunger, or that the 2/3rds of people who are overweight are lazy and lack discipline? Remove processed carbs, add fat.

And while 2018 is shaping up to be the best year for GDP growth in the U.S. in a decade, the final economic reports of the year indicate what the stock market has been telling investors over the last month — 2019 will be worse for the economy.

The wind industry is not mine. Makes no difference to me whether they automate or not. If they go bankrupt and leave those farmers holding the bag, oh well. Nothing they haven’t seen before with the oil and gas industry. However, I doubt it would take long to take a wind turbine down. Not like the toxic, contaminating wells industry is constantly dumping on those “hapless farmers.”
