Nuclear weapons have not gone away, and the Trump administration has brought a new urgency, if not a new approach, to dealing with them. The President has met with Vladimir Putin as the New Start Treaty with Russia comes up for renewal in 2021, the first presidential summit ever with Kim Jong-un occurred to discuss denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, and President Trump has decertified the Obama nuclear deal with Iran. To what degree should past nuclear talks guide future U.S. nuclear arms control negotiations? Can the art of the deal apply to stabilizing our nuclear future?

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a serious threat to human health. An understanding of the molecular biology underlying HIV replication and pathogenesis will be crucial for stopping this devastating pathogen. The molecular biology of HIV reflects the evolutionary interplay between virus and host. HIV infects primarily CD4+ T cells and macrophages and must overcome intracellular restrictions to do so. HIV and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) commandeer cellular ubiquitin ligases to eliminate intrinsic antiviral proteins. The HIV protein Vif recruits the cellular cytidine deaminase APOBEC3G to the cullin5-elonginB/C complex (1). This interaction results in the polyubiquitination, and subsequent proteasome-dependent destruction, of APOBEC3G (2–6). In the absence of Vif, APOBEC3G is packaged into progeny virus, where, upon infection, it deaminates negative-DNA-strand cytidines during reverse transcription, thereby introducing G-to-A mutations into the coding strand. The hypermutated viral genome is thus rendered ineffective for the production of viral progeny (7–12). HIV-1 Vpu can tap the SCFβ-TrCP E3 ubiquitin ligase complex to help clear tetherin from the cell surface (13–15). In the absence of Vpu, tetherin links cellular and viral membranes to anchor virus to the host cell plasma membrane. Tetherin thus restricts viral dissemination (16–18).

As I said, not a fan. I’m more inclined toward the decentralized energy security and independence some politicians are personally embracing for their own lives. Preparations are underway for the 2019 Northwest Jazz Festival that will take place on August 23rd and 24th in the Village of Lewiston. The Board of Directors and Jazz Festival Staff will hold a fundraiser, “A Taste of Jazz” at the Brickyard Brewing Company (436 Center Street, Lewiston) on Sunday, March 31st from 4pm – 8pm. The fundraiser will help offset some of the costs of producing the free two-day outdoor music festival.

Perhaps more disturbingly, there is evidence that similar exposures at specific stages of embryogenesis may influence the gender identity of the affected child.At present there appears to be no widespread discussion of how such biologically active chemicals might influence gender and sexuality and this might be a very difficult conversation to initiate, because of the personal and sociological sensitivity of such matters.It would be valuable, in my opinion, to have serious expert examination of such important topics as the psychosexual effects of these now ubiquitous chemicals.
