A world first study conducted in Australia (published in The Lancet 2004) looking at the long term effects of exposing healthy young girls at puberty to DES or Ethinyloestradiol to stunt their growth ( as they were considered to be going to grow too tall) has shown impaired fertility is statistically significant later on in life. Subsequent Dutch study has replicated this as well as showing significant premature ovarian failure later on in life. Timing of exposure is critical as shown in this ‘canary" group. I am surprised that Catalyst program did not cover DES exposure in humans. It is fundamental to any discussion and research on endocrine disruption.

This change in Kinmen’s status became possible when the People’s Republic of China, newly recognized by the United States and most other nations, initiated its “Reform and Opening” under Deng Xiaoping. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Deng had decided that China was going to join the global economy, and Taiwanese were welcomed to the mainland as Chinese-speakers with business acumen and money to invest. In 2001, to accommodate the increasing flow of people across the Taiwan Strait, the two sides initiated the first major experiment on Kinmen, along with Taiwan’s other coastal islands: direct post, transportation, and trade links to mainland China. The “Mini-Three-Links” experiment was a success, and the links were extended from Kinmen another hundred miles to the island of Taiwan. Kinmen is, in some ways, a good testing-ground. It has deeper historical ties to China than Taiwan proper, and has never stopped communicating with it. Even in the mid-1970s when tensions were high between the two sides, a few Kinmen locals have told me they continued the ancient habit of rowing small fishing boats over to the city of Xiamen for a meal and a change of scenery. No one could tell they were not locals.

The amino acid sequence similarity between CUL4A and CUL4B suggests that the two proteins could be interchangeable, but this is not the case. No humans who lack functional CUL4A have been identified, likely due to a role in spermatogenesis similar to that observed for mice (52). Human males lacking functional CUL4B present with X-linked intellectual disability (XLID), while female carriers are unaffected (53–56). Nakagawa and Xiong showed previously that WDR5, an H3K4 methyltransferase, is specifically depleted by CUL4B, but not by CUL4A, and that this determines neuronal gene expression profiles (57). CUL4A overexpression has been associated with breast cancer (58), hepatocellular carcinoma (59), and pleural mesothelioma (60). A complementary observation showed that skin-specific deletion of CUL4A protected mice against UV-induced skin cancer (61).

To fit the side bumper brace, I just welded a few studs to the outside of the frame, since I had no desire to drill four holes through four 1/8-inch thick walls. Unfortunately, the weld beads at the base of the studs meant the side brace coming from the corner of the bumper to the frame couldn’t go flush with the rail, so the brace is now a bit too long, and will need to be cut down to the right size. This isn’t particularly elegant, I’ll admit.
