A final bonus for Escher and his people on this project is something that can be all too rare in the construction industry: appreciation. The building went from a two-pipe system where the main HVAC system was either in heating or cooling mode to a system that can provide concurrent heating and cooling based on individual occupants’ preferences.

Through an acquaintance who teaches geography at Kinmen High School, I arrange to interview students there. When I arrive on a rainy evening, Hong Xiangwen is waiting for me outside the student dormitory, long hair pulled back in a ponytail, wearing a tracksuit with the school’s name on it. She and a classmate both hold out their umbrellas, smiling shyly. Hong is 17 years old and bashful; she keeps ducking her head and burying her face in part of her collar. By contrast, her classmate Yang Xiaojun, a bright-eyed 17-year-old, “loves to talk,” as she tells me quickly. Soon we establish a rhythm as we sit at little chair-desks in an empty classroom: I ask Hong a question, then turn to Yang when she doesn’t seem to want to answer. Yang is very happy to help.

Yes, Nathan. I think the way you described it is exactly right. Early in the down cycle, 2015 and 2016, we spent a lot of time on cash flow generation and debt paydown. And then at the low — and of course, associated with that was cost reductions and facility consolidation. But we spent a lot of time in 2017 and 2018, investing in technology and investing in facilities, once we retracted into what was the smaller footprint. And so I think we’re finishing up the final investments in facilities. I expect when we do the final expansion at La Porte this year by midyear, that our facilities will be set for us for growth for the next three years at least.

But definitely, in December, we saw U.S. upstream spending just really slowed to a significant amount. And that is carried into January. But there’s always this January, February, our major customer base, remember now, 55% of our revenues come from our top 25 customers as all of the major players. They normally have a shorter ramp up of their new budget years after board approvals and CapEx spending levels.

To store my food, I use 12-by-20-inch Loksak Opsak bags (from $10). These bags are odor proof, at least when new—within a few days, I bet the exterior smells like food. I still like them, though: they’re tough and see-through.
