In Xiamen, a Chinese friend introduces me to her cousin, Mr. Gong. He is a musician, or rather, he creates music with software. He plays me a sample of something he is working on for the State Oceanic Administration (his employer, Little Egret Art Center in Xiamen, is a government work unit). When he presses a button on a computer in his office, the sound of crashing waves fills the room, accompanied by drums and violins. “It’s American software,” he explains.

Mark, First off, I wanted to say thank you for the balanced and informative report–very well done. You may be interested to know that one of the bigger issues currently being discussed in Japan is what the appropriate limit for atmospheric radiation should be. Your rule-of-thumb limit, for example, only works if people routinely spend 100% of their time outdoors (and, by the looks of the video, in a prone position on the ground), which, thankfully, they don’t. As a result, there is much effort being put into various models which make assumptions about how much time people spend indoors, outdoors, the building materials of their houses, offices, etc., in order to find a more accurate and meaningful number. Increasingly, these models are being enhanced through the use of dosimeter information from the residents themselves. Initially, the limit established by the government, as mentioned in your article, was 0.23 uSv/hr at 1 meter off the ground assuming an annual target of 1 mSv/yr, which would mean your measured value, as it was measured much closer to the ground, was probably in the neighborhood of 1 to 2 times “the maximum dose rate considered safe for the general public” rather than 50 times. Recently, however, there has been talk of increasing the limit above 0.23 uSv/hr as dosimeter data has shown that the assumptions used in calculating that number are overly conservative (see the link below). The only other point I had a question on was this statement by Olivier Evrard: “We’re very surprised to see that in the upstream part of the catchments we have depletion of the contamination in the recent riverine sediments.” The idea that sediment and therefore contamination moves downstream is hydrology 101, and should be expected here. Maybe there was something missed in the context of this statement due to editing the story, but this should not be surprising (unless the rate was higher than they expected?). All in all, this shift of contamination from the land to the sea is a good thing as we are better off, relatively speaking, having 100 Bq of Cs 137 in ocean sediment rather than in surface soil as ocean sediment is used less intensively from an organic standpoint and the water itself shields the radiation. (Though we’d all be better off if the 100 Bq didn’t exist in the first place!)Keep up the good reporting. http://www.city.date.fukushima.jp/uploaded/attachment/10030.pdf

El Mejdani says one recent evening, as he discussed his students with their parents, several of them — some highly paid in the oilsands industry — quietly proposed he teach them computer programming, too. ‘I had four engineers coming and asking if we could offer [them] after-school or night courses.’

As for the front section of the frame, Michael cut out one of the two-inch sides of a two-inch by three-inch rectangular tube. This resulted in a U-shaped channel, which I inverted and dropped down over top of the front section of the frame’s new inner sleeve:

I have met only one person who could truly bear proof his hangs. Kevin Sawchuk learned his craft in the 1970s, when hangs were still permitted in the High Sierra. Unfortunately, not everyone read Sawchuk’s tutorial or could replicate him, and land managers decided that hard-sided canisters were the most effective strategy against their wily black bears.
