Big Agnes says that the 20-by-72-inch rectangular Insulated AXL that I tested weighs just 11.9 ounces, but mine weighs 12.6 ounces with the included stuffsack. In its factory packaging, it’s about the size of a one-liter bottle—although it’s difficult (and not worth the time, in my opinion) to pack it that tightly again. I roll mine to full width, fold it in half, and keep it in a larger stuffsack.

Even perception itself, he says, is “enslaved by action”: To gather information, the eye darts, the diaphragm draws air into the nose, the fingers generate friction against a surface. And all of this fine motor movement exists on a continuum with bigger plans, explorations,10 and actions.

But reinforcement learning, too, has pretty major limitations. In the real world, most situations are not organized around a single, narrowly defined goal. (Sometimes you have to stop playing Breakout to go to the bathroom, put out a fire, or talk to your boss.) And most environments aren’t as stable and rule-bound as a game is. The conceit behind neural networks is that they are supposed to think the way we do; but reinforcement learning doesn’t really get us there.

“We need the metals. Or we will have to stop doing practically everything we do — we have to stop the green technology, we have to stop having cell phones, electric cars,” says James Hein, a senior USGS scientist. “We have an opportunity right now to do something. Let’s be sure that when it is done, and it will be, that it’s done in an absolutely environmentally sound way as possible.”

Couple on gross margins here. I think you kind of addressed this a little bit in your prepared remarks. 19.6% adjusted gross margin in 2018, you’re 19.8% at the midpoint of guidance. Typically, you’d see in this kind of bit more deflationary environment some pressure on gross margins. And I think you mentioned maybe some of the — the absence of some of these large projects from 2018 gives you a bit of a tailwind on gross margins there. But maybe you could just discuss what the puts and takes are that gave you that 20 basis points of expansion in 2019, despite some of the commodity deflation we’re seeing here?

The Insulated AXL is appropriate for three-season conditions but definitely not for winter. Personally, I found the Insulated AXL to be amply warm in temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and acceptable in temperatures from 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so long as I took other measures to maximize my nighttime warmth (e.g., bringing a warm sleeping bag, picking a soft campsite, sleeping in my insulated clothing, and eating and hydrating well before bed).
